Discover Clatsop County

Clatsop County

Early county business took place in Lexington before activities shifted toward Astoria. Voters selected Astoria as the seat in 1854, and county government met there in 1856. The county's coastal history also includes the Lewis and Clark expedition's winter of 1805–1806, within a region named for the Clatsop people. The county-seat transition adds an institutional history to the coastal setting. Fishing, forestry and the expedition account each describe another relationship between local communities and the surrounding water and land.

Begin in Astoria, then choose a specific coastal park or historical destination for a wider visit. The river mouth and ocean setting provide geographic context, while the Lexington-to-Astoria story adds a civic thread beyond the familiar expedition history. Choose a river-facing stop and an ocean-facing stop only if the travel time suits the day. Local interpretation can connect the scenery with working communities rather than scenery alone.
