Tillamook County

Tillamook County was formed from Yamhill and Clatsop counties in 1853 and named for the Tillamook people. Voters selected Tillamook as the seat in 1873. Dairy farming became a defining industry, while the forest landscape includes areas regenerated after the series of fires known as the Tillamook Burn. The coastal economy and the recovering forest represent different relationships with land. Together with the changing civic center, they give the county a history extending beyond any single visitor landmark.

Pair a dairy-history or creamery visit with a specific coastal destination such as Cape Lookout or Nehalem Bay. The bays and towns differ in character, so choose a focused route that gives time to both a community and the landscape. Use current visitor information for the chosen creamery or park, since they serve different purposes. A single bay area can supply enough variety for a slower and more attentive outing.
