Clackamas County
Clackamas was one of Oregon's four original counties in 1843 and was named for the Clackamas people. Oregon City became an early territorial capital and legislative center. Willamette Falls remains an important Indigenous fishing and cultural place, adding a history that is much older than the county's administrative beginnings. Territorial institutions and Indigenous relationships with the falls are related to the same landscape but are not the same story. That distinction gives the county's river setting greater historical depth.
Pair Oregon City's territorial history with interpretation at the Museum of the Oregon Territory. For a different outing, research a Mount Hood destination separately. The falls, city and mountain belong to the same county story but require different visitor planning. Allow the museum visit to shape the questions taken into the wider landscape. Mountain travel and riverside interpretation involve different distances, conditions and access arrangements, even within one county.
